Detecting Symptoms of Thyroid Problems Is Easy – If You Know What to Look For!

While having symptoms of thyroid problems is, unfortunately, quite common, the symptoms can go unnoticed for long periods of time. If one is conscious about what goes on in their body, though, an over or under-active thyroid can be detected, and therefore treated, quite quickly.

A gland located in the neck, mostly deals with our metabolism. Therefore, having unexplained weight loss or weight gain can be a symptom of thyroid problems. An under-active thyroid can make it extremely difficult to lose weight and since the thyroid would not be working as it is supposed to, the metabolism would slow down and anyone affected would inexplicably gain weight. Bloating or at least a feeling of bloating could also be caused by an under-active thyroid. On the other hand, an overactive thyroid could make it very difficult to gain weight and could cause weight loss, even if one keeps on eating exactly the same things. Unexplained weight changes could therefore mean you might be experiencing a thyroid issue.

The thyroid also greatly affects our mood. Feeling moody or depressed could indicate you have a thyroid problem. If you feel nervous or feel like you don’t enjoy doing anything anymore, it could be a strong indication. In fact, people having these problems are very likely to experience depression to a certain degree, and the more severe the problems are the more severe the depression gets.

Energy levels are also highly affected by the thyroid, and in fact a powerful indication of a real problem feels fatigued all the time for no particular reason. And will most likely cause low energy levels even if one gets enough rest.

Other symptoms of thyroid problems include bowel problems, muscle or joint pains and strange changes in hair and skin, which include, but are not limited to hair loss and dry, scaly skin. In addition to this, those who have a history of thyroid issues in their family are more likely to suffer from problems themselves. An enlarged or swollen thyroid is also a symptom of thyroid problems. The gland swells up and becomes noticeable just under the Adam’s apple. This could in turn lead to difficulty breathing and swallowing as well as to a change of voice.

An under-active thyroid could also affect the concentration making it hard to concentrate and causing a certain fuzziness to the mind which could also lead to memory problems.

A racing heart could indicate that the thyroid is overactive, and this leads to having shaking hands and could even cause insomnia.

It has been proven that women are more likely to experience problems with their thyroid than men, and inconsistencies in the menstrual cycle could also be a symptom of thyroid problems. Moreover, the chance of getting thyroid problems increases with age.

Experiencing any of the above could mean that you might be having thyroid problems. Treating these symptoms is critical, and if one suspects they might have an over or under-active thyroid treating it as soon as possible is highly recommended.
